David! The Joyful Life of David Beckman

Please consider helping us fund "David!" which offers a delightful glimpse into the life of David Beckman, a man born with Down syndrome. David was born in 1966 and it was common at that time to institutionalize those born with this disability. The film will follow him through his years growing up in rural Minnesota with a loving family. David has become a charming and funny adult who lights up a room wherever he goes. He is a great representative of what those with Down syndrome can achieve!

First, a bit about myself. My name is Tony Ducklow and I began making movies during junior high school. As an adult, I won multiple awards for a local children's TV program I created called "Captain McCool and Friends."  I am also an author and wrote the award-winning children's novel, "The Summer of the Crows."  I've been a public school teacher since the 1990s and taught many different subjects over the years, including classroom and media.

I'd been looking for a film project for years and recently realized it was right in front of me.  I first met David 25 years ago and it wasn't long before David became a member of our own family. Soon, the holidays didn't feel right if David wasn't there making everyone laugh with his clever remarks, showing off his dance moves or smarting off to my brother. It began to dawn on me that he would be a great diplomat to the world for those with Down syndrome!

What Do We Need?

As I mentioned in the video, the average documentary costs conservatively from $1,000 to $2,000 a minute. This could make my film cost from $50,000 to $100,000. But by doing most of the filming and editing by myself and with a very small crew, I believe we can do it for $20,000. I will also use that money to enter the film in festivals across the country to give it as much exposure as possible.

What Do You Get?

As I write this, my team is feverishly working on creative ideas and incentives to get you to donate. The first thing you will get is a wonderful feeling inside you that you donated to something that will enlighten many people about what a person with Down syndrome is like.   Let me be frank - when was the last time you saw someone with Down syndrome in a movie or TV show? Maybe never.

The next thing you will get is A TAX DEDUCTION!  The more you give, the bigger the deduction! Since our fiscal partner is The Grove Center for the Arts and Media, we can receive non-profit donations so you can be extra generous with your gift.

Those who donate will get their name listed in the credits, just like the big stars! You will also get reserved seating at the theater where we will premier the film.

What You Can Do!

In order to reach our goal, we need you to share this page with as many people as possible! Post it on Facebook, share it in an email, tell your friends and family! We can do this!
